BTC Logistics: Fleetio

For more than 40 years, The Beach Timber Companies (BTC Logistics) has supplied critical infrastructure materials across the United States. With a fleet of more than 280 vehicles and assets, two pole mills, and an inventory of 80,000+ wooden utility poles at any given time, BTC plays an essential role in powering communities and supporting utility providers nationwide.

Published in 2025 by Zach Searcy, this case study highlights key insights from the Fleetio-hosted webinar, outlining the major takeaways and discussion points covered throughout the session.

Calders & Grandidge (Boston)

Beach Timber Company welcomed visitors this week from Calders & Grandidge (Boston) Limited. These visitors from the United Kingdom were on-site to compare the differences between Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris), commonly used in the UK, and Southern Yellow Pine (Pinus echinata), used in the United States for wooden utility poles.

One of the most notable differences was knot size. Scots Pine has many small limbs, while Southern Yellow Pine has fewer but larger limbs. Since limbs leave knots, utility pole specifications regulate the number and size of knots allowed.

With the UK forecasting significant growth in its electrical grid over the next few years, there is a growing demand for additional utility pole resources. Beach Timber Company, strategically located near the Ports of Savannah and Jacksonville, considers exports a key part of its business and is excited about the opportunity to introduce Southern Yellow Pine to the UK market.
